Red Pandas
Early in 2008, long before the earthquake, I went to Chengdu to see the pandas. Since giant pandas are far more popular than their red cousins, I decided to feature the red pandas first.

Lunch while Hiking
We did not eat lunch inside the yurt. It seems to have some issues.
Someone did bring a little stove to cook our lunch.
It was a random, but good feast.

Even More Hiking
You can barely see the city in the distance.
There wasn't exactly a trail to follow.
So we had to make our own way at times.
In between the hills, there was a small river.
And some markers. I don't remember what they are for.
On a level part of the return trip.

Hiking Again
I promise I will leave the lake today.
See no lake. A broken fence instead.
And an interesting hill.
We stopped here for a short a break. They let us take rest in their house.
There were a bunch of houses in the area.
Even if they don't look like houses to us, people do live in them.
This one looks a little nicer, but still rustic.
And we start hiking again.

More Hiking
I just loved looking at lake. It was refreshing especially compared with the rest of the hike.
There was plenty of picture taking by the lake before we really got started.
Another quick look at the lake.
You can see over the lake how quickly it turns brown.
It is a very dry area.
The browns and reds are beautiful.
But it is refreshing to see some green among all the brown.
This many plants is not common outside of the city.

Hiking with Friends
A while back, I went hiking with friends on the west side of the city. These photos are from that trip.
Our hike started with a stop at this beautiful lake.
The surrounding area is dry, desert-like.
So it was a surprise to see so much water and green in the middle of it.
There were plants on the shore.
A little desert oasis.
Surrounded by brown mountains.
The water really was beautiful.
